Giant floor cushion

Dit weekend maakte ik een heel groot vloerkussen af waar ik al langere tijd mee bezig was. Mijn kat ligt al langer op het onafgemaakt deel, en zelfs toen het nog gewoon een streng wol was was ze er niet bij weg te slaan. Kijk maar eens naar dit blogbericht. Dit kussen is 65 x 65 cm en ik gebruikte een haaknaald 12mm en vier strengen Naturalia van Borgo de Pazzi. Het patroon is heel simpel: ik zette een rij lossen op zo breed als het kussen en haakte vervolgens 33 rijen met halve stokjes. Ik maakte twee vierkante en die naaide ik aan elkaar. Het kussen is nu klaar en een keer raden wie er nu al op ligt...

This weekend I finished this giant floor cushion that I was working on for a long time. My cat was sleeping on the unfinished part for the past few months, and even when it were just skeins of yarn I couldn't keep her away from it. Check this blog post about it. The cushion is 65 x 65 cm and I used a crochet hook size 12mm and four skeins of Naturalia by Borgo de Pazzi. The pattern is very simple: I made a foundation chain as long as the pillow was wide and then I just made rows of half double crochet stitches (US terms). I made two giant squares and sewed them together. The cushion is ready now and guess who's sleeping on it...

Yarn Party & Giveaway

Gisteren had ik weer een superleuk wolfeestje. Dit keer zijn we door Draad en Praat uitgenodigd bij Knotten in Delft (bij mij om de hoek dus) Lang Yarns wol proberen. Het was niet alleen reuze gezellig, ik heb er ook nog wat nieuwe dingen geleerd. Zo heb ik voor het eerst in mijn leven gebreid op rondbreinaalden, en ik heb gezien hoe tunisch haken nu eigenlijk gaat. Dat had ik nog niet eerder gedaan, dus het was leuk om nu eens te zien hoe het werkt. De garens waren echt prachtig! Francis van Knotten legde ons uit dat dit garens uit het duurdere segment zijn, en dat was ook goed zichtbaar en voelbaar. De kleuren waren ontzettend mooi en ik heb al een favoriet bolletje uitgezocht. Nu nog even bedenken wat ik van al dat moois ga maken.
Ik ga trouwens over twee weken naar de Handwerkbeurs in Zwolle! En hoe leuk is dat ik twee kaartjes mag weggeven? Stephanie van de website Vilt & Knopen won in 2013 een kaartje bij mij voor deze beurs, en nu biedt ze zelft twee kaartjes aan een van mijn volgers aan. Is dat niet leuk? Yesterday I had a supercool yarn party! This time we were invited by Draad en Praat at Knotten in Delft (so around the corner for me) and we got to test Lang Yarns. It was so much fun and I also learned a few new things. For the first time I knitted in the round, and I finally saw how to do Tunisian Crochet. I had never seen that before so I liked it a lot. The yarns were truly magnificent! Francis from Knotten explained that these are the more pricy yarns, and we could very well see and feel it. the colors were so pretty and I already picked my favourite one. Now I just have to decide what to make of it.
By the way, I'm going to the Handwerkbeurs in Zwolle in two weeks time! And I love to tell you that I can give away two tickets to one of my followers. The yarn test and giveaway!

Zoals je in mijn vorige blogbericht hebt kunnen lezen mocht ik een superleuke garentest voor Wolplein doen. Toen ik de bolletjes met garen binnenkreeg en ze zag dacht ik dat ze wel erg veel op elkaar leken. Dus ik was benieuwd of er een duidelijk verschil zou zijn. Ik heb verschillende dingen geprobeeerd. Allereerst gewoon een paar proeflapjes. Daar viel meteen al op dat Phildar Phil Coton 3, een garen waar ik altijd mee haak, zo ontzettend zacht is. Eigenlijk de zachtste van allemaal. Van ByClaire Nr 1 en SMC Catania viel op dat ze in vergelijking met de andere garens best stug zijn. Dat is vooral fijn als je platte dingen haakt. Van Yarn and Colors Must-Have viel me in eerste instantie vooral het label op. Ik kende het garen niet en al doet het label er niet zo veel toe, het zag er in elk geval heel fris uit en trok direct mijn aandacht. Het garen haakt ook heel fijn.
Na de proeflapjes ben ik platte vormen gaan haken. Daar viel meteen op wat me daarvoor ook al was opgevallen: ByClaire Nr 1 en SMC Catania blijken uitermate geschikt voor dit soort projecten. Wat plat moest zijn werd ook prachtig plat. Katia Capri oogt even dik als de andere garens, maar het voelt iets dikker aan en is ook heerlijk zacht. Samen met Phildar Phil Coton 3 is dit het zachtste garen. Van Lana Grossa Cotone vond ik nog niet zoveel, totdat ik bij mijn derde project aankwam: bloemetjes haken vanuit een magische ring. Dat is vrij priegelig werk, dus ik was benieuwd. Bij alle garens ging het prima, maar bij Lana Grossa Cotone viel me op dat ik een paar keer door de draad heen stak. En als het al zo priegelig is dan is dat niet fijn. Ik moet wel zeggen dat ik daar bij het proeflapje en het platte motief geen last van had, dus het hangt ook echt van het project af hoe een garen bevalt.
Maar welk garen stak er nou met kop en schouders boven uit? Feit is dat elk garen fijn is, en het hangt er ook vanaf wat je haakt. En natuurlijk is het ook zo dat iedereen iets anders prettig vind. Mijn favoriet? De Katia Capri. Ik vind het fijn zacht, het is een soepel garen en alle projectjes met dit garen zagen er mooi uit. En wat wil het toeval? Pas toen ik klaar was met testen zag ik dat ik dit garen in 2013 ook als favoriet had gekozen.
Ik vond het erg leuk om dit garen te testen en zoals ik in mijn vorige blogbericht al aangaf vind ik het leuk te lezen wat jouw favoriet is. In de rechterzijbalk kun je uit de zes garens die ik mocht testen een favoriet kiezen.

As you may have read in my previous blog post I was asked for a super fun yarn test for Yarnplaza. When I received the balls of cotton I noticed that they looked very much alike. So I was wondering if there would be a difference. I tried various projects. First of all, I made a few squares in different stitches. I noticed immediately that Phil Phildar Coton 3, in comparison with the other yarns, is incredibly soft. Actually, it was the softest of all.
ByClaire of No. 1 and SMC Catania were, again in comparison with the other yarns, quite stiff. This is especially nice if you crochet flat objects. The label of Yarn and Color Must-Have caught my attention. I had never heard of the yarn and although the label does not matter much, it looked very fresh and drew my attentio. The yarn was also very nice to crochet with. After the squares I started crocheting flat shapes. What I had already noticed: ByClaire No. 1 and SMC Catania are particularly suitable for this type of project. What was supposed to be flat was really flat.
Katia Capri looks as thick as the other yarns, but it feels a little thicker. It is also very soft. Along with Phil Phildar Coton 3, this is the softest yarn. I didn't notice anything in particular about Lana Grossa Cotone, until I arrived at my third project: crocheted flowers from a magic ring. That's pretty complicated work, so I was curious how that would work out. All yarns were great, but with Lana Grossa Cotone I stuck the needle through the yarn a few times and I didn't like that. I must say that this didn't happen with the other projects, so it really depends on the project you're making.
So now I had to decide what yarn I liked most. The fact is that each yarn is great, and what yarn is best can depend on the project. And of course we all love different things. But my favourite is Katia Capri. I like its softness. It is a smooth yarn and all projects that I made looked very nice.
And you know what? It was only until I completed this test that I noticed that in 2013 this yarn as my favorite as well.

About crochet hooks

Wat is het heerlijk weer he? Ik gebruik de avonden om lekker buiten te zitten met een haakwerkje en pas als de muggen komen en ik mijn haaknaald echt niet meer zie verhuis ik naar binnen. Was het maar altijd zulk weer. Deze granny square haak ik met Phildar Coton 3 en een haaknaald 3mm. Het is me opgevallen dat niet elke haaknaald 3mm gelijk is. Zo heb ik een haaknaald 2.5mm die dikker is dan de 3mm. Dat is toch best apart. Ach, als je het eenmaal weet kun je er een beetje rekening mee houden. Ik haak nog even verder en ik wens jullie allemaal een fijne zomerse avond toe.

The weather is so lovely in The Netherlands. I'm using all evenings to sit outside with my crochet project until the mosquitos appear and I cannot see my crochet hook anymore because of the dark. I wish we always had lovely weather like this. I am making this granny square with Phildar Coton 3 and a crochet hook size 3mm. Just recently I noticed that not every 3mm crochet hook is the same. In fact, I have a crochet hook size 2.5mm that's bigger then my 3mm hook. That's weird, don't you think? Oh well, once you know you get used to it. I'll just go on crocheting and I wish you all a lovely evening.

Ik haak heel erg vaak met Phildar katoen, en ik heb heb denk ik alle kleurtjes al eens ergens in verwerkt. Maar de gemelleerde versies gebruik ik eigenlijk veel te weinig. Where's your yarn?

De katoen die ik gebruik bewaarde ik voorheen altijd in een doos in de kast, maar niet zo lang geleden kwam mijn vriend met deze boekenplank thuis. Ik had deze boekenplank al eens in een ander huis gehad maar ik moest 'm destijds laten hangen. Toen ik ontdekte dat hij niet meer te krijgen was vond ik dat vreselijk jammer. Dus als verrassing had mijn vriend de moeite gedaan om een tweedehands exemplaar op de kop te tikken. En dan bedoel ik echt veel moeite, want ga maar eens met de auto naar het centrum van Amsterdam op de dag en op het tijdstip dat Sinterklaas daar aankomt, waardoor je dan zo goed als in de optocht belandt (voor wie niet weet hoe dat er dan uitziet, zie de foto hieronder) omdat degene die de boekenplank verkoopt in die straat woont... Maar eind goed al goed, want de boekenplank hangt weer boven mijn bureau maar dit keer gevuld met katoen in plaats van boeken. Dat was ook zijn idee. Leuk toch?

I used to keep the cotton that I use in a box in a closet. But not so long ago my boyfriend came home with this bookshelf that he bought for me as a surprise. I had the same bookshelf in the house that I lived in before, but I had to leave it there when I moved. When I found out that it's not available in the shops anymore I really regretted the fact that I had to leave it behind. So my boyfriend took the trouble to find me a second hand version. And then I mean a lot of trouble, because go to the centre of Amsterdam by car on the day and time Sinterklaas arrives, so that you almost end up in the arrival ceremony (see what that looks like on the picture below) because the person who sells the bookshelf lives in that street... But, all well ends well and the bookshelf ended up on the wall next to my desk but this time filled with cotton instead of books. That was also his idea. Fun isn't it?

About yarn

Ik kreeg een email met de vraag welke wol en welke haaknaald ik gebruik voor mijn patronen. In principe gebruik ik altijd dezelfde wol: Drops Paris van Garnstudio. Daarbij gebruik ik een haaknaald 4 of 5, afhankelijk van wat ik wil maken.
Vandaag trouwens even geen link naar een patroontje. Ik had iets leuks in gedachten maar ben helaas de foto kwijt. Maar volgende week maandag volgt er zeker weer een!

I got an email from someone asking me what yarn and what size crochet hook I use for my patterns. In principle I allways use the same yarn: Drops Paris from Garnstudio. I use that in combination with a crochet hook size 4mm or 5mm, depending on what I'm making.
I haven't been able to add a link to a new pattern today. I had something fun in mind but unfortunately I lost the picture somehow. But next week on Monday there wil definitely be another pattern on my blog!

A box filled with yarn - Een doos vol garen

Van de week kreeg ik een mailtje van iemand die een doos wol over heeft. Niet zomaar een doos wol. Het is een doos vol met allerlei soorten garen: dik, dun, katoen of wol. Sommige bollen zijn wat verkleurd door de ouderdom, maar volgens mij zijn er genoeg mensen die daar wat moois mee kunnen maken. Nu is het zo dat de eigenaar van deze prachtige doos garen het weg wil geven. Maar dan wel het liefst aan iemand die dit zelf niet zou kunnen betalen. Iemand die misschien allemaal mooie ideeen heeft, maar het gewoon niet ten uitvoer kan brengen omdat dat gewoon even niet gaat. Ben jij of ken jij zo iemand? Stuur me dan een mailtje. Je hoeft helemaal niks toe te lichten over jouw situatie of over de situatie waarin die ander zit. Maar om wel te kunnen voorkomen dat hier misbruik van gemaakt wordt (want helaas heb je zulke mensen) heb ik bedacht dat alleen mijn volgers kunnen reageren op dit bericht. De verzendkosten worden overigens door de gever betaald en het wordt alleen binnen Nederland verzonden. Als er meer aanmeldingen zijn zal de gever een keuze maken. Reageren op dit bericht kan per email tot en met 8 mei a.s.

Last week I received an email of someone who has a box of yarn left. Not just a box of yarn. It's a box filled with all kinds of yarn: thick, thin, cotton or wool. Some of the balls of yarn are coloured by age, but I think there are enough people who can make something really gorgeous of it. Now, the owner of this box wants to give the box away. But preferably to someone who cannot afford this. Someone who might have lovely ideas, but cannot do something with it because that's not possible right now. Are you or do you know someone like that? But to make sure noone is taking advantage of this (because unfortunately that happens) I decided only my current followers are allowed to respond to this. The shipping costs will be paid by the sender of the box en it will only be shipped within The Netherlands. Je krijgt dan een patroon, wol, houten breinaalden, een gewone naald en een uitleg hoe je moet breien. Het perfecte kado voor iedere breier volgens mij!
