Granny Square Projects

I recently crocheted these two pillows and they have found a nice place on the chair in my garden shed. It fits so nicely in such a tiny wooden house. Meanwhile I am busy finishing a large granny square blanket. I always fasten off yarn ends at the end of a project (and not while making it), and with such a large blanket where you change colors every row it's quite a job. But it is progressing steadily and one happy day it will be finished. I wish you a pleasant Sunday!

Round Crochet Pillow - Free Pattern

About two weeks ago I saw a gorgeous pattern of a bag in the latest Inside Crochet. So I bought the magazine (the digital version) and all of a sudden I was totally into crochet again. I searched my yarn stash and found some gorgeous colours and made the bag. I will write a blog post about the bag later this week. But once I started, I couldn't stop crocheting and made this round pillow of the yarn that was left. It is a pretty simple pattern and I think it's perfect for beginners. You can find the free pattern below (scroll down, it's below the Dutch version). I made the granny pillow in 2020. That pattern is available on Ravelry for free (in English and Dutch). Click here to go to that pattern. Have a lovely Sunday!

Haakpatroon rond kussen

Haaknaald: 4.5mm
Kussen: rond kussen, maat 40cm

4. Haak 2 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (32)
5. Haak 3 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (40)
6. Haak 4 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (48)
7. Haak 5 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (56)
8. Haak 6 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (64)
9. Haak 7 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom.
12. Haak 10 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (96)
13. Haak 11 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom.
15. Haak 13 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (120)
16. Haak 14 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom. (128)
17. Haak 15 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom.
19. Haak 17 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom.
21. Haak 19 halve stokjes, meerder in de volgende steek. Herhaal rondom.

Crochet pattern round pillow

Crochet hook size: 4.5mm
Yarn: every yarn that's for a crochet hook size 4.5mm
Pillow: round pillow, size 40cm
General remark: if you crochet more tight or more loose than I do, your cover might be too small or too big for the pillow. If that happens you can leave out or add extra rows. I did not mention where you have to change colour so you can decide for yourself when and where to do so. If you don't know how to change colour, click here for a tutorial. This pattern is written in US terms.
INC = increase (in this pattern you increase with half double crochet stitches)
HDC = half double crochet

1. Make 6 SC in a magic ring (click here for a tutorial). If you don't want to use the magic ring, make 2 chain stitches and do 6 SC in the first chain. Make 1 slip stitch in the first SC, chain 2 (these 2 chains never count as a stitch in this pattern).
2. INC around (with HDC), make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC (so not in the chain stitches, see remark at the end of row 1), chain 2. (12)
3. INC around, make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC, chain 2. (24)
4. 2 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (32)
5. 3 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (40)
6. 4 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (48)
7. 5 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (56)
8. 6 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (64)
9. 7 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (72)
10. 4 HDC, INC, 4 HDC. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (80)
11. 3 HDC, INC, 6 HDC. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (88)
12. 10 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (96)
13. 11 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (104)
14. 6 HDC, INC, 6 HDC. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (112)
15. 13 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (120)
16. 14 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (128)
17. 15 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (136)
18. 8 HDC, INC, 8 HDC. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (144)
19. 17 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (152)
20. 9 HDC, INC, 9 HDC. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (160)
21. 19 HDC, INC in the next stitch. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row, chain 2. (168)
22. 10 HDC, INC, 10 HDC. Repeat around. Make 1 slip stitch in the first HDC that you made at the beginning of this row. Fasten off and work away yarn ends. (176)

Now make another circle just like the one you made before, but don't fasten off at the end of row 22. Place both halves on top of one another with the right sides facing outside. Now make single crochet stitches around, make sure to go through both stitches of row 22 of both halves. Don't forget to put the pillow inside before you close the pillow. Fasten off and work away the remaining yarn ends.

Katia Seacell Cotton

A while ago I crocheted this blanket and pillow from Katia Seacell Cotton. It was such a nice project to make. I used 1 ball of each color and a crochet hook size 4mm. The yarn is so lovely and soft, I will definitely use it again for another blanket. The pattern of the blanket can be found here on Ravelry. The pillow is actually a very simple striped pattern of half double crochet stitches (US terms). The size of the pillow depends on how much yarn you have left after crocheting the blanket. Of course you can also buy extra balls, but I always like to see what I can make with 1 ball. More blanket patterns are here, more cushion patterns are here. I wish you a happy Sunday!

Cloud Cushion

It took a while but the cloud I started making (read about it here) is finally finished. I really think it has become super cute. In the original pattern the cloud is white, but I still had a lot of gray, so that's why I opted for gray. The cloud was not difficult to make but in the end much bigger than I thought. I crocheted with crochet hook 3.5mm and two balls of Durable Coral Light Grey. The size is just right for me (approximately 30cm wide), but the pattern is based on crochet hook 6.5mm. So then you get a really big cloud. The book can be found here, and the loose pattern of the cloud can be found here. The pillow in the background is matches with the blanket in the foreground. I will tell you more about that this weekend. Have a nice day!

Sunburst Cushion - Free Pattern

This cushion was on my desk for a long time because it was not finished yet. All I needed to do is work away the yarn ends, but that can be a job that I'm so not looking forward too. So I finally did it today, and I was ready in 15 minutes. I really don't know why this had to to wait for two months...
The pattern (US terms) of the granny squares is below the pictures and below the Dutch pattern. It is the same pattern as the squares of this blanket. You have to make 9 squares for a cushion insert of 37 cm. You will join the squares as you go using this method (this is a Dutch blog, a similar tutorial in English is here). When you have a square of nine squares, you will add another two rounds of double crochet stitches. Those rounds are made of 2 double crochet stitches with 1 slip stitch in between every set. Make a front and a back and close the pillow insert by sewing the squares using this method. I used different colours for each side, but you can use any colour you like. I made this pillow insert with Paintbox Cotton Aran and a crochet hook size 4.5mm. Happy crocheting!

Patroon Sunburst Square

Pattern Sunburst Square

Cluster stitch --> the cluster stitch is two DC's of which you skip the last step. Then do yarn over and pull through the last three loops on your hook. If you have never made a cluster stitch, here's how to do it step by step:
Yarn over hook, yarn in next stitch, yarn over, pull yarn up (you now have 3 loops on your hook), yarn over, pull yarn through 2 of the 3 loops on you hook (you now have 2 loops on you hook). Yarn over again, place hook in the same stitch as before, yarn over, pull yarn up (you now have 4 loops on your hook), yarn over, pull yarn through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over, pull yarn through 3 loops on your hook.

1. Make a magic ring, chain 2 (they don't count as a HDC). Make 16 HDC in the ring, make a slip stitch in the first HDC you made.
Note: if you don't know how to make a magic ring, click here. If you don't want to use a magic ring, do the following: Chain 3, make 16 HDC in the first chain you made.
2. Chain 2, make 1 DC, chain 1.
* Make 1 clusterstitch in the next stitch, chain 1. *
Repeat around what's in between *. After the last chain stitch: make 1 slip stitch in the first DC you made at the beginning of this row (so not in the second chain, but in the DC next to it). Change colour while doing so.
3. Make 1 slip stitch in the next chain-1-space. Chain 3 (count as the first DC), make 1 DC in the same space, chain 1. Make 2 DC in the next chain-1-space, chain 1.
The next chain-1-space is a corner: make 2 DC, chain 2, make 2 DC in that chain-1-space.
* Make 1 chain stitch, make 2 DC in the next chain-1-space.* Repeat what's in between * once.
Make another corner. Repeat the previous steps around, and end this row with a slip stitch in the third chain (so the first DC) that you made at the beginning of this row. Make another slip stitch in the next DC and in the next chain-1-space.
4. Repeat the previous row by making 2 DC's in every chain-1-space with 1 slip stitch in between. The corners are the same: 2 DC, chain 2, 2 DC in the same space.
5. Make another row just like row 4 but this time you start joining the squares. See above for a link to a clear tutorial.

Crochet Star and Moon Pillow Set

I tried to make a moon some time ago, but I didn't expect it to be so difficult. I kept trying until it had the right shape and size and this weekend I was able to finish it. The star is a pattern that I designed some time ago, and because they match so well you'll receive the pattern of the star when you purchase the pattern of the moon. The pattern is available in English (US terms) here on Etsy and here at LoveCrochet. I made these pillows with Paintbox Yarns (Simply Chunky and Cotton Aran). Once finished they have the same size: they are both 35cm wide/high. Have a happy Monday!

Giant floor cushion

This weekend I finished this giant floor cushion that I was working on for a long time. My cat was sleeping on the unfinished part for the past few months, and even when it were just skeins of yarn I couldn't keep her away from it. Check this blog post about it. The cushion is 65 x 65 cm and I used a crochet hook size 12mm and four skeins of Naturalia by Borgo de Pazzi. The pattern is very simple: I made a foundation chain as long as the pillow was wide and then I just made rows of half double crochet stitches (US terms). I made two giant squares and sewed them together. The cushion is ready now and guess who's sleeping on it...

Granny Square Pillow Cover

I'm still working on the cushion cover that's supposed to be in my cat's basket. I already made 25 squares (click here for the pattern) in various colours and I crocheted the edging. The back of the cushion is a large granny square. I crocheted the front to the back. Unfortunately I didn't pay enough attention to what I was doing, so the cover is a bit too small for the cushion. So I have to figure out how I'm going to solve that. I think I'll try to find a smaller cushion. Or shall I unravel the edging and make the whole cover a bit bigger? Mmm, I'll figure it out somehow.

Fijn weekend!

My cat decided to take over the yarn basket that I had to store my yarn. If you wonder how she did it: she just threw everything that was in the basket on the floor and started sleeping in the basket. But the bottom of the basket is pretty rough, so I placed a cushion in it. And that's where she never wanted to leave the basket anymore. I didn't have a cover for the cushion, so I'm making one right now. It will be a cover made of small granny squares. They crochet pretty quickly so I hope to finish it soon. The pattern of the square is here. Enjoy your weekend!

Crochet Owl

I made this week this owl cushion. It was lots of fun to do and it was done pretty quickly. I think that mainly had to do with the fact that I used a double thread of Paintbox Yarns Simply DK and a crochet hook size 5.5mm. I fulled this cushion with fyberfilll from the brand ReStyle. I had been using HEMA-filling for a pretty long time, and I was amazed that it was such a difference. With HEMA-filling I kept putting filling in the amigurumi, and it took a long time before it was all filled up. With ReStyle the cushion was full pretty soon. It is a bit more expensive, but is really is worth it because I'll be using this bag for much longer. Do you want to make this owl? The free pattern of this owl cushion is here.

My cute cat

I thought this picture was too cute not to share. My cat fell asleep on my Star Pillow and Bobble Stitch Pillow. I cannot believe that this is a nice pillow for a cat to sleep on, but she obviously thought otherwise because she didn't move for hours. :-)

It's finally finished, my Bobble Stitch Pillow. I made this pillow with MillaMia yarn which is available here. I used 7 balls in total. For the front I needed 4 balls (color Marine Blue), for the back 3 (color Stone). I didn't make any bobbles on the back, so that's why I needed one ball less. MillaMia just introduced a couple of lovely new shades, you can see them all on the picture below. You can use this yarn with a 5mm crochet hook, but I used a 4mm hook. The yarn is very soft so you can use it for other things as well, like a blanket or garments. I made this sweater and this sweater with this yarn, but also this pillow. Do you want to make the pillow above? It's a free pattern. You can download it here as a PDF. In the PDF you will find instructions in US terms, UK terms and in Dutch. It's all in the same PDF. I hope you will enjoy it and if you decide to make a pillow with this pattern I would love to see it at my Link Your Stuff link party one day.

Woops!

Woops!

Woops! I just realised that I had promised to post another book review yesterday. But I was so busy working on the pattern above that I totally forgot. I promise to post it next week. The pattern above will be a cushion cover. I made it with MillaMia yarn which is available here. I used that yarn for this pillow, this sweater and this sweater. The pattern of the cushion cover will be a free download. I'll upload it on LoveCrafts this weekend, where you can download it as a PDF and where you can order the yarn if you like. I'll let you know as soon as it is available, on Sunday at the latest. I hope to see you then!

Star Pillow Pattern

A few weeks ago I was looking for a pillow pattern in the shape of a star. Because I couldn't find what I was looking for I decided to make a pillow myself. I thought it would be lovely to have this pillow in two or more colors on my couch. It was a pretty complicated job but ofcourse I loved doing it. I used MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran and a crochet hook size 4mm for this pillow. You can find MillaMia yarn here. The yarn is lovely and super soft. I didn't use a pillow as a filling, I just used fyberfill. The finished pillow is 50cm wide. The pattern is through Etsy (click here), Ravelry (click here) and LoveCrafts (click here).
In the meantime I'm also working on another book review. The next few weeks I will post a book review each Wednesday. I will try to make a project from each book, so I can tell you if a pattern is easy to follow or not. Click here if you would like to read my previous book reviews. Well, that's all for today. I wish you a lovely Sunday and I hope to see you on Wednesday!

Contributing to a new book

Because I've spent most of my time studying last year most crochet ideas somehow faded to the background. Lately I had moment when I didn't know what to crochet. In the end I always have some nice projects somewhere, but it wasn't as easy as before. As if I had forgotten how it goes. That all changed when I received an email from an American book publisher last week. They asked if I was interested in contributing to a new book. Ofcourse I didn't say no to that :-) The ideas popped up immediately and it was all of a sudden like I was back where I used to be before I started studying: full of plans and ideas. Now all I need is finding the time to do it all :-) I'll keep you updated about the new book, I'm very much looking forward to this! The pattern of this pillow is available here.

Granny Bag

Because I love this bag a lot I decided to start making it. I still had some yarn from the Zeeman-shop so in an evening I made 7 squares. I needed 24 for this bag, but the squares are easy to make. Because I'm using a 5mm crochet hook they became pretty big. Actually, they became too big for a bag. And that's when I remembered that I have a very large cushion in my closet (72x72cm), and all of a sudden I knew: I was going to make a cover for it with these squares. I do need to make some extra squares now, because I need 50 squares for the cover instead of the 24 I already made.
By the way, in the corners I did 2 chain stitches in stead of 3. I thought it looked better, especially now that I'm using a 5mm crochet hook and I don't want the holes to be too big. I can't wait until it's finished, and as you can see my cat can't wait either as you can see on this picture on Instagram.

A new pillow

I checked my closet just lately and I discovered that I have a huge stash of yarn. I could almost start a little wool shop, so it's time to start crocheting and make some space. The granny square is pretty and easy to make, and because I have a few pillows as well it seems fun to make some pillow covers. Normally I close the covers by sewing the, but this time and want to make a cover that's open so I can remove the pillow later on. I found this blog post in which Jennifer explains how to make such a cover. A fun and easy method I believe, so I'm going to try it. The front is already finished, so now I can start with the back. By the way I was surprised how slowly the amount of yarn reduces. Even after making this cover the box seems just as full. Oh well, luckily I have enough ideas so one day the box will probably be empty. Have a lovely Sunday everyone!
p.s. read a recent update about this cover and more about the yarn I used here.

Crochet Pillow

If you follow me on Facebook (click here) then you might have seen what I've been working on the past few days. I made this pillow from cotton that I had in my drawer for a long time and it was perfect for making this happy pillow. I wrote the pattern down, which was almost more work then making the pillow itself. That's because I wanted to make it a pattern that can be adjusted to any size so you can use any round pillow you like. I managed to do that and you can find the pattern (and more pictures) here. I crocheted this pillow with Phildar Phil Coton 3 and a crochet hook size 3mm.

But now... it's time for the winner of the giveaway! The crochet pattern of the lovely tulips is for...

Ien Buijs

If you send me an email you'll receive the pattern as soon as possible, Ien! If you didn't win you can get the pattern in the Etsy-shop of Sol. Have a lovely week everyone!
p.s this pattern is now available in this lovely book.

Square Pillow

This is such a pretty pillow, I'd love to make it myself one day. But my list of projects that I want to make is already very long. Perhaps I'll make it in Spring or Summer, because it's extra nice to make these colourful projects when the sun is shining. The pillow above was made by Anniesdesign, who has a wonderful collection of crochet projects on Flickr (click here). It's definitely worth a visit. She got inspired by this wonderful blog that's also really worth a visit. I'm sure you love them both.
