How to: sew granny squares!

Sewing granny squares isn't very complicated. There are a few different ways for it. Below I'll explain it by using the pattern of the tiny bag above. You can use this method for all patterns where you have to sew squares, so you can use it for pillows or blankets as well. I made the square above with Drops Paris cotton. You can also use another yarn, like Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. For both yarns I use a crochet hook size 4mm.

To make the bag, start with crocheting two squares.

Haak in totaal 8 stokjes.
Haak in dezelfde 1-losse-opening 1 stokje.
Haak in dezelfde opening 2 stokjes.
7. *Haak 1 losse. Haak in de volgende 1-losse-opening 3 stokjes. Haak 2 lossen. Haak in dezelfde 1-losse-opening nog 3 stokjes. Haak 1 losse.

1. Chain 4 (they count as 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet), do 1 double crochet in the first chain.
2. Now do 1 chain stitch and 1 double crochet in the first chain of row 1. Repeat this until you have 8 double crochet. End with a slip stitch in the first double crochet. Change colour when you do.
3. In the next 1-chain-opening: 1 single crochet + 2 chain stitches (this is the first double crochet). Do 1 double crochet in the same 1-chain-opening.
4. Now do 1 chain stitch + 2 double crochet in the next 1-chain-opening. Repeat until you've gone round. End with a slip stitch in the first double crochet.
5. No do 1 slip stitch in the next double crochet. Change colour here.
6. In the next 1-chain-opening do 1 single crochet + 2 schain stitches (this is the first double crochet). Do 2 double crochet in the same opening.
7. *Do 1 chain stitch. In the next 1-chain-opening: 3 double crochet. Chain 2. In the same 1-chain opening: 3 double crochet. Do 1 chain sitch. In the next 1-chain-opening 3 double crochet.* Repeat what's in between * until you've gone round. End with a slip stich in the next double crochet. In each of the next two double crochet: 1 slip stitch.
8. Repeat rows 6 and 7. The underlined part of row 7 has to be done 1 extra time in this row. So you do that twice on every side. If you would increase with more rows, every time you do so you have to do this 1 time extra.
9. If the square is big enough you do a row of single crochet on each side. In the 1-chain-openings you do 1 single crochet as well. In every corner you do: 1 single crochet, 1 chain stitch, 1 single crochet. Fasten off when you're done.

En dan nu het op elkaar naaien. Hieronder zie je een rij foto's. De uitleg staat onderaan.

Now the sewing part. Below you see a row with pictures. Scroll down to see the text that goes with the pictures.

1. You made two squares. Now you need cotton and a needle. 2. Place the squares with the right side on top of eachother. So on both sides the inside is on the outside. 3. You look at the row with single crochet you did on the edge. Every single crochet has two loops, so if you place two single crochet on top of each other you see four loops. 4. Pull you needle through the two outer loops. 5. So not through the inner loops. 6. And not through all four loops. 7. If you pull the yarn through the outer loops only, your work will look like this on the other side. And if you do this on three sides (for the bag) it looks like this.

I hope this tutorial was useful! Enjoy making granny squares :-)

How to: change colour!

Doesn't changing colour always go the way you want it? I made a tutorial in which you can see how it's being done.

Make the turning chain with the new colour. So after the last stitch (photo 1), bring the new yarn over your hook and pull through the loop on your needle (photo 2).

Halverwege een rij - Halfway a row

Actually it's the same with every stitch: the last loop of a stitch is the new colour. So with a single crochet: insert hook in the next stitch, bring the old colour over and around the hook, pull the old yarn through the stitch (photo 2), bring the new colour over and around the hook and pull through both stitches on your hook (photo 3). If you keep going it looks like photo 4. See the pictures below.

Elke andere steek net zo - Every other stitch just like this

Like this, you can change colour with every stitch. For instance, see below that it's done with a double crochet like this as well.

How to: make a magic or adjustable ring

Laat het me weten! ***

Some time ago I asked my Dutch readers what tutorial they would like to see. One of the favourites was the magic ring, also known as the adjustable ring. Below you'll find a photo tutorial on how to do that. What's so great about the magic ring is that is closes the top of your work really neat. For those of you who would like to actually see it done I uploaded the movie that's on top of this post. If you still think it is too complicated, remember that there's always another way. For instance: if a pattern says you have to make 6 single crochet in a magic ring, you can also do this: chain 2, do 6 single crochet in the 2nd chain from hook. That's it, so no worries if you can't get it done but I'm sure you will get it done if you practice enough. Good luck! And don't forget to vote on your favourite link at Link Your Stuff!
*** More tutorials will be added soon: how to crochet a granny square, how to attach a granny square to another granny square, increase/decrease. Do you want another tutorial that's not mentioned here? Let me know! ***

1. Leg de draad over je vinger - Place the yarn on your finger.

2. Sla de draad twee keer om je vinger - Wrap the yarn twice around your finger.

3. Leg de draad waar je mee werkt dwars over de andere draden - Place the thread that you're working with across the other threads.

4. Steek de haaknaald onder de twee draden door en sla de draad waar je mee werkt om de naald - Place your crochet hook underneath the two threads and wrap the yarn that you're working with around your hook.

5. Trek de draad onder de twee draden door - Pull the yarn from underneath the two threads.

6. Sla de draad weer om de naald - Wrap the yarn around the crochet hook.

- Pull the yarn through the loop. This is the first loop and this one doens't count as a single crochet.

8. Doe de naald nogmaals onder de twee draden door en sla de draad weer om de naald - Place the yarn underneath the two threads one more time and wrap the yarn around the hook.

9. Trek de draad onder de twee draden door - Pull the thread from underneath the two threads.

10. Sla de draad weer om de naald - Wrap the yarn around the hook again.

11. Trek er doorheen en je hebt je eerste vaste - Pull through and you have your first single crochet.

- On the picture above I made another single crochet and after that I removed the ring from my finger. Now keep making single crochets in the ring until you have enough.

- Now pull the end of the yarn to see what thread disappears in the ring first. Pull the disappearing thread so the other one goes first. If you don't do that, it's not possible to pull that thread in the ring later on.

If everything went well the thread disappeared in the ring and you have on loop left.

15. Trek aan het uiteinde om ook die lus te laten verdwijnen - Pull the end to make that loop disappear as well.

And this is what is looks like if you did 6 single crochet in the ring, and decreased around in the next row to 12 single crochet.
