Crochet Shrug

When I recently received some beautiful balls of Pappagallo yarn (Lana Grossa), I immediately knew what I wanted to make. A shrug had been on my wish list for some time, and these balls were so perfect for this project that I got started right away. Crocheting a shrug is great fun and not difficult to do. I always enjoy crocheting with gradient yarn, because you never know how it will look in the end. And while crocheting, I already look forward to the next color that appears. And so with these four balls, I had plenty to look forward to while crocheting.  Because it is such a fun project to work on, I have written down a tutorial below. The yarn kit can be ordered here at Knotten in Delft. There are many different colors which are all equally beautiful. I used color number 4. If you decide to make this shrug, I wish you a lot of fun crocheting.
Note: if you use the English tutorial, look for the italic text. The crochet stitches are written in US terms.

Benodigdheden - Materials

- Haaknaald/ crochet hook: 8mm

- 4 bollen Pappagallo. Het garenpakket kun je hier bestellen. / 4 balls of Pappagallo. You can order the yarn kit here.

- Een schaar / a pair of scissors.

Algemene tip / general remark:

Don't crochet too tight, your work should be a bit loose. If your work looks more tight or much more loose then on the photo, use a different size crochet hook. Sometimes half a size is already enough.

Beschrijving (scroll down for the English version)

Tutorial - stitches written in US terms

- First you're going to crochet a big rectangle. To do so I set up a row of 102 chain stitches. If I put that row of chains around my waist the ends don't touch, there's still a space between them of about 10/15 centimeters. If, like me, you had 102 chains, then you crochet the first half double crochet in the 100th chain that you crocheted (so no matter the amount of chains, always do the first half double crochet in the 3rd chain from your hook). Then you crochet 1 half double crochet in all the other stitches. At the end of the row you will have crocheted 100 half double crochet stiches. Now chain 2 and turn your work. Continue by making 1 half double crochet in every stitch of this row. I didn't count the first chains as a stitch, so I always crocheted the last half double crochet of a row into the first half double crochet of the previous row and not into the second chain that I started the previous row with.

- I crocheted a total of 43 rows with half double crochet. The long side is the width, the short side is the height. Now check if you like the length of your shrug and adjust it if necessary. Keep in mind that you will be crocheting a collar later on, so it will grow slightly bigger on all sides (including the top and bottom). If you like the length, fasten off and continue making the sleeves.

- Before you can make the collar, you have to make the armholes. Do this by folding the ends together, see the photo above how I did that. You then sew about half of the two pieces together. See the part circled in white. Do that on both sides so you have two sleeve holes. Now go ahead and make the collar before you make the sleeves.

- To make the collar, attach the yarn somewhere on the side. I attached the yarn at the same place where I've sewn the ends for the arm holes. That's where it's the least visible. The border is crocheted with double crochet stitches. The first row of the border, you crochet partly through the half double crochet stitches of the last row of half double crochet stitches you made and partly through the first row of chain stitches you started with at the very beginning. When you've crochet all around, crochet a slip stitch into the first double crochet that you made (again, I skipped the two chain stitches and didn't count them as stitches). Then turn your work, chain 2 and start crocheting another round of double crochet stitches. Repeat this until the collar has the desired width. I crocheted a total of 17 rows, but feel free to adjust it if you like it differently. The last row is a row of single crochet stitches. When I came to the end of that row, I added a slip stitch in the first single crochet I made at the beginning of the row and I fastened off.

- The last thing you need to do is to crochet the sleeves. You can make them as long as you want. Attach the yarn somewhere in the armhole. Depending on the size of the opening of the sleeve hole, crochet as many double crochet stitches around as your opening is wide. You crochet the double crochet stitches into the row ends of the rectangle you crocheted. I crocheted 1 double crochet in the end of each row. I crocheted a total of 26 sticks all around. At the end of every row, make 1 slip stitch in the first double crochet you made, chain 2 and turn your work before you start on the next row.
In total, I crocheted six rows of double crochet stitches, and then I had half-length sleeves. If you want them longer, just continue until your sleeves have the desired length. The last row I made is a row of single crochet stitches. At the end of a the last row, do as always: 1 slip stitch in the first stitch of this row and fasten off.

  3. Waarom is haar linkerkant zo mooi doorlopend en de rechterkant onderbroken in de kleuren?
